LANGUAGE ARTS
In reading this term, students learned how to choose just-right books and reviewed decoding and accuracy strategies. Comprehension strategies such as connecting and visualizing were taught, modelled and practiced. They built their read-to-self stamina and read with a partner on a regular basis. Identifying story elements such as setting, characters, problem and resolution was introduced.
In writing, students used their journals for a variety of personal writing and worked on adding details and staying on topic. Weekly word sorts and a variety of word games and activities reinforced sight word identification and spelling concepts. Handwriting or printing was also practiced.
In oral language, students participated in readers’ theatre activities and listened to read alouds and videos to find main ideas.

During calendar time, concepts such as skip counting (both forwards and backwards) ways to represent numbers and number families are reinforced. Students also reviewed place value, addition and subtraction, including an introduction to regrouping. Using benchmarks and graphing were also introduced this term and the concepts will be reinforced over the next term.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Mapping was our first unit and students learned to read maps and use them to find information. Text features of information texts such as indexes,, glossaries and fact boxes were also pointed out.. Students were able to create simple maps of their own. We then moved on to a unit about Canada that included videos, slideshows and class discussions. Students began researching a province of their choice.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
In our matter unit, students learned about the properties of matter, used their senses to make observations and inferences and were able to make predictions.
In the computer lab, students learned how to sign in to the school computers, used the Ten Thumbs program to learn typing skills and Prodigy to practice their math skills. Students also participated in the Hour of Code in an activity designed to introduce them to the basic concepts behind coding computer programs.
HEALTH AND CAREER

FINE ARTS
Students used a variety of materials to produce seasonal arts and crafts both 2D and 3D. Students learned to use their voices and actions together for our Christmas concert song and practiced using their voices to convey emotion in our readers’ theatre activities.
