I'll start this week's update with a reminder that there will be no school for students on Friday, as teachers will be taking part in professional development opportunities. It's also an exciting week as we will be getting a Smartboard installed in the classroom. The Smartboard is an interactive whiteboard with Internet capabilities and gives us many more learning opportunities and tools.
We wrap up our unit on place value this week and begin one on subtraction. Students will learn a variety of ways to 'take away' : among them-using number lines, counting backwards, and using addition.
We have been working on visualizing what we are reading as students listen to Roald Dahl's Witches. This week we will be discussing how to choose just right books.
Students have been learning how to log in to the school system, have started Ten Thumbs (a typing program) and have been practising math skills using Arcademic. Arcademic is a free website with many arcade-type games that allow children to practise their math facts (and other skills) in a fun way. Check out the link above to try some of these at home.
Our library day is Tuesdays, but students are encouraged to bring back their books early if they are finished with them.
Thank you to all the parents who have sent a box with their child. I've been labeling them and storing them to bring out as needed.
DROP EVERYTHING AND READ (DEAR)
On Monday October 26 we will be celebrating reading by wearing pajamas and trying to read for twenty minutes! This is a district celebration to recognize the importance of reading.
Mrs. Gorman has kindly volunteered to DJ a primary dance in the gym on the afternoon of October 30. Students may dress up for the event, but:
- they must be able to get in and out of their costumes independently as they will be changing at lunch
- please leave masks, easily lost or potentially dangerous accessories (such as weapons) at home
