SUMMERTIME!
Happy summer! While summer is the time to relax, reconnect and recharge, students need some practice with the skills that they have learned, especially reading.
Some ideas--
Reading: The summer library program is an excellent incentive for kids to read over the summer, but reading with your child on a regular basis is just as important.
Math is easily practiced during the summer by noticing patterns, counting change, telling time, skip counting, recognizing more or less....well you get the idea:)
Science: Encourage your child to observe the world around them and create questions ( I wonder why....). Taking it to the next level and finding answers to the questions is wonderful, but just the act of being curious helps stretch your child's brain.
Social Studies: Look at maps before road trips, notice directions when in your neighbourhood, create your own maps of familiar areas.
Fine Arts: summer is a perfect time for nature crafts or painting with water on the driveway. There are lots of excellent websites and books to use as resources. Sing campfire songs. Make up skits.
Writing: journaling, story telling, word searches colouring and dot-to-dot (for fine motor skills)
Resources
Reading
Book a Trip (summer reading incentive program at the library) The library also runs many other activities over the summer. Be sure to check for details on the bulletin board when you go or on the library website.
Tumblebooks- your library card will work as the password if you go through the TNRD library site. Tumblebooks are read along picture books that are semi-animated.
Math
Arcademic- practice math skills with arcade style games NB US site so not as good for spelling or geography
Prodigy- password was sent home NB works best when using Google Chrome as a browser (free download)
Calendars- see calendar webpage
Other
BrainpopJr. - a paid site, but they do have free educational videos- some are free all the time and others are free only when they are the video of the week. Each video comes with an online quiz and an activity.
Skoolbo- I have heard great things about this program, but haven't used it since it just expanded to Canada. The plus to that is that they are offering free trial memberships.

A final word
Make it fun. You don't need to have a set time and sit your child at a desk with a worksheet. Make curiosity and learning a shared adventure. Have a great summer!
