TERM TWO OVERVIEW
LANGUAGE ARTS
In Language Arts this term, students learned were given choice about when to complete their weekly activities (such as word work, reading with a partner and journal work). Comprehension strategies such as inferring and questioning were taught, modelled and practiced. Older comprehension strategies and text features were reviewed. Identifying story elements such as setting, characters, problem and resolution was also reviewed and practiced.
In writing, students continued to use their journals for a variety of personal writing and also began work on both an information and creative pieces using the five step writing process. Weekly word sorts and a variety of word games and activities continued to reinforce sight word identification and spelling concepts. Handwriting or printing was also practiced.
In oral language, students again participated in readers’ theatre activities and listened to read alouds and videos to find main ideas. Students also used speaking to present and respond to ideas.
MATHEMATICS
We began this term by learning about money- identifying coins, amounts and making change. As in term one, during calendar time concepts such as skip counting (both forwards and backwards) ways to represent numbers and number families are reinforced. Measurement and time were covered and fractions were introduced.. Using benchmarks and graphing were reinforced this term.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Students used their research to create a project about a province of their choice. We then began our First Nations Unit.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
In our water unit, students learned about the water cycle and how water interacts with the land to create landforms. We also looked at forces and energy this term.
In the computer lab, students continued to use Ten Thumbs to hone typing skills and Prodigy to practice their math skills. Students also learned the basics of Google Drive with a focus on creating a document. Students learned how to format their document, add a picture, use spell check and how to share their work.
HEALTH AND CAREER
The focus this term has been positive relationships, healthy choices and goal setting.
FINE ARTS
Students used a variety of materials to produce seasonal arts and crafts both 2D and 3D. Students learned to move in time to a variety of songs and created their own dances.
Physical Education (with Mrs. Foster)
- Demonstrate proper technique for performing specific locomotor movement skills including but not limited to the following: running jump, leap
- perform selected non-locomotor and locomotor movement skills in sequence
- demonstrate respect and encouragement for others during a variety of types of physical activity
Students will continue to work on demonstrating safe behaviours and following rules and directions when participating in physical activity.
